This weekend marks a mainstay for Dogwood Hills Golf Course near Waverly.

The annual Rodeo Tournament (pronounced ROW-DAY-OH) has traditionally been the culmination of the Wednesday Night League. This year, however, the tournament was opened to players outside the league.

About 30 players will hit the course over the weekend in two flights.

“All the golfers really look forward this time because it’s just a great way to mark the end of the league and the season,” said Billy Robbins, a three-time winner.

The tournament used to be a one-day event, but went to a 36-hole, two-day format in more recent years.

Handicaps are established based on league results as are the pairings for each group.

“It’s just a good format that the players like,” said Matt Crace, who is on the tournament committee. “We have a lot of guys who put in hours and hours to organize this and make it happen.”

Crace said he likes the individual stroke play format and a calcutta is a popular feature that players enjoy.

Robbins said he will not participate this year, but has great memories of past outings.

“I look at the times I have won it as a real accomplishment,” he said. “We have a lot of good golfers in the league and I think it’s special to end this way.”

The tournament’s origins date back to the 1960s at the Waverly Golf Club and later moved to Dogwood Hills.

“I’ve been a member since 2012 and play in it each year,” Crace added. “I really look forward to it and hope we have a great time this weekend.”
